The Alanya region, according to archeology, is exposed to have been inhabited at least from prehistoric times onward. Antalya makes its original apearance in the 2nd century B.C. – as an enclave for renegade pirates; it was called Korakesion.The Romans afterwards overtook the town in their campaign to thwart piracy in the east Mediterranean. It came under Byzantine rule after 395. The great castle and dockyards were built In 1220 when the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I took the city.The city, known then as Alaiye in a mutation of the Seljuk sultan’s name, was used by the Seljuks as their naval base in the Mediterranean and it remained an important military post in Ottoman times.The Arab traveler Ibn Battuta visited Alanya one century afterwards and described it in this way:" A large town on the seacoast, the city of Alaiye is inhabited by Turkomans and visited by the merchants of Cairo, Alexandria, and Syria. A well-wooded district - wood is exported from Alaiye to Alexandria and Damietta, wherefrom it is carried to the other cities of Egypt. "
